Introducing Robinhood Gold

What's the story behind Robinhood Gold?

Robinhood Gold is more than an advanced version of Robinhood – it is our vision for how the next generation of experienced investors will interact with the stock market. We believe that even complex tools like using leverage can be made focused, straightforward and powerful.

And we’ve built it in a uniquely Robinhood way, by carefully designing the details and cutting the confusing, bloated costs. Features like added buying power and extended hours trading seamlessly extend the core features, and you pay a flat price just once every month.

Does this mean Robinhood is going to stop being free?

Free trades with Robinhood are not going away. That’s our promise.

Our mission is to democratize access to financial markets to everyone in the world. It’s the reason we started Robinhood, and it is the pursuit of this goal that gives meaning to everything we build. A part of this mission is offering the best financial tools in the most cost-effective way possible.

Robinhood or Robinhood Gold?

Our goal when building Robinhood Gold was to craft a simple, delightful and cost-effective tool to enable some of the more advanced ways to invest in the stock market.

Gold has a simple, flat cost structure so you’ll always know how much you’re being charged. You’ll have access to new features that allow you to take advantage of the market even further, including increased buying power and extended-hours trading.

How do I upgrade to Robinhood Gold?

You can simply tap “Robinhood Gold” in your account menu. You can learn more about upgrading to Robinhood Gold in our help article.

Gold Buying Power

What is Gold Buying Power, and what are the benefits?

Gold Buying Power - it’s money that we lend to you to buy stocks in the stock market. You can invest more, and keep the profits. It also gives you flexibility with your cash: if you see an opportunity and want to invest more, you can right away without depositing from your bank. And if you need to withdraw some cash from your account for day-to-day spending, you can use Gold buying power to keep the stocks you’ve got and not have to sell.

What are the risks?

Because Gold is a margin account, there are additional risks and responsibilities you should be aware of. Buying stocks using margin amplifies the gains and losses in your portfolio. We’ve built Robinhood Gold to help protect you from these additional risks by including checks and notifications to help keep you informed.

Do I get charged interest on top of the monthly charge for using Gold buying power?

You will not get charged interest or fees in addition to the fixed monthly charge of the tier you selected. We created a flat, once-per-month pricing structure to help make the cost of using leverage easier to understand. So rather than starting with an interest rate, and working out how long you may end up holding stocks purchased with Gold, you know exactly how much you’re spending up front. Pay once per month and you’re done. And of course, trades are commission-free.

Extended Hours Trading

What are the new market hours?

Traditionally, the markets are open from 9:30AM EST - 4:00PM EST during normal business days. With extended hours trading, you’ll be able to trade:

  • Pre-Market opens 30 minutes earlier starting at 9:00AM EST
  • After-Hours continues for 120 minutes (2 hours) until 6:00PM EST

That’s an extra two and a half hours of market access, every single day.

How is extended hours trading useful?

Here are two common uses for extended hours trading:

Earnings Announcements

The companies you own announce quarterly earnings after the market closes. Depending on the outcome, the price can move much more than during the full day. With after hours, you can capture these opportunities as they happen.

Activity in Foreign Markets

Foreign markets—such as Asian or European markets—can influence prices on US markets. Activity on these markets happens outside core US market hours, so with after hours you can capture opportunities around these events.

You can learn more about Extended Trading Hours by reading our help article the extended hours trading disclosure.

Instant Deposits

When are instant deposits useful?

With Robinhood Gold you get instant deposits, so you can use the cash from bank transfers to Robinhood instantly (instead of the standard 3 day hold). So if you see an opportunity in the market, you capture it by increasing your buying power right away.

Has anything changed from Robinhood Instant?

Instant Deposits in Robinhood Gold work the same as in Robinhood Instant. The difference is that with Gold, we’ve increased the maximum size of your instant deposits from $1000 to your tier. And if you currently have Robinhood Instant, you can keep using that for free, it’s not going away.
